Frequently Asked Questions

What is Play Therapy?

Play therapy is real therapy for children ages 3-10. Through play therapy, children learn to communicate with others, express feelings, modify behavior, develop problem-solving skills, and learn a variety of ways of relating to others. Play is a child’s language and toys are their words.

How do I know which session to schedule?

Please book a parent intake appointment first, so we can talk without the child present and make certain that this is the right step for you and your child. If your child is 3-9 years old, schedule a play therapy appointment. These counseling sessions are child-centered where play materials are used to facilitate communication between the child and the therapist. If your child 10 or older , he/she might benefit from adolescent counseling. Adolescent counseling is more directive and will likely consist of therapeutic activities. Adolescents will receive emotional support, understand feelings and problems, and try out new solutions to resolve inner conflict. It is important to understand their unique phase of life and meet them where they are.

Do you take insurance?

I am a private pay counselor. I provide documentation, upon request, that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

Can you provide a diagnosis?

Diagnosis is often an important step in further developing effective patient treatment plans based on patients’ individual needs. I can provide a diagnosis, if necessary, after an adequate number of sessions with your child.

How often should my child come to therapy?

Consistency is key! You will see more progress and growth with weekly, 50 minute sessions. I recommend at least 12 sessions. Sometimes, behaviors can increase and get worse before they get better. I will guide you through the process and help you determine the best plan to meet your child’s needs.

How can I be a part of my child’s journey?

A lack of confidentiality can interfere with the therapeutic relationship. A child may be reluctant to disclose information to a therapist if they know their parents will eventually learn about it. However, I love to communicate with parents and offer suggestions, so they can provide additional support at home. Parents are encouraged to schedule a 30-40 minute consultation. Consultations are $100 and take place over Zoom/Google Meets.
